New Invoicing Options

We’ve just added some new, more flexible ways to invoice to complement our new Project functionality.

While we were at it we gave the whole screen a bit of a spruce up, so it should now be even faster and easier to get your invoices sent!

These are “Quick Links”, which break out your entries by Project and/or month, so you can just choose one of those and get on with it.

Sometimes you need more control though, and that’s what the “Custom Invoice…” option does. We feel that it gives you infinite ways to invoice!

Choosing “Custom…” works the same way as Reports, so you can slice and dice your invoice (and even include or exclude individual entries) however you’d like.

Xero: Less Logging In

Today we deployed a quick update for people who are sending their invoices to and syncing their contacts from Xero.

We added support for their “Partner Apps” (http://blog.xero.com/developer/api-overview/setup-an-application/#partner-apps - warning, developery!) which means that we can now sync with Xero in the background - no more login popups!*

We’ve got a bunch of other improvements planned and we’re working hard, so watch this space.

(* You’ll have to log in one last time so we can get credentials for the new shiny stuff)

On Track - at a Glance!

Today’s update is a little like an iceberg - small on top but has a massive impact!

We’ve added a slight shading to the Goal bars on your Time tab so you can see how far through the period you are, and whether you’re on track to hit your Target (or stay inside your budget).

So here you can see I’m about 70% of the way through the goal period, but I’ve only logged a few hours - so I’m woefully behind! Better get cracking!

We’ve been hard at work today, tweaking a few little things for you to make your MinuteDock experience even better - if that’s even possible!

We’ve added a search filter to the Reports drop-downs, so you can now find that pesky Contact even if you’ve got hundreds!

We’ve changed the way “Pinning” works for reports to make it a little more obvious. You can now run your Pinned reports from a friendly button in the top right of your screen, and Pin the current report for later by clicking the green pin on the filter bar.

And last, but not least, we’ve opened up the Goals view so that all your Goals now show on the Time tab. Previously we only showed 4 Goals max, and only Daily or Weekly goals. We thought it would be a little confusing if Monthly goals showed up when a month ended midway through a week, but the overwhelming feedback from you guys has been that you want them there - so we hear ya!

Scheduled Maintenance

Following on from the upgrades last week, we’re going to be doing a little bit of maintenance to keep MinuteDock super snappy (also, our Tumbeasts need feeding…)

We’re planning to do this on this ~~Sunday, 13 March from 3.00pm to 4.00pm NZST~~ Wednesday, 9 March from 12.00am to 1.00am NZST (see it in your time zone) - we’ve moved this forward due to MinuteDock being slooooooow.

Just a quick update today. We’ve just put the finishing touches on a massive backend upgrade.

This shouldn’t mean too much for you day-to-day - just that some things are a little shinier (check out those new buttons from James!) and possibly a bit snappier (getting faster all the time).

We’ll be in touch soon letting you know about all the great new features and upgrades we have planned. Bring on 2011!

PDF Invoicing

This one’s been brewing for a while… you can now send invoices with MinuteDock without going through Xero!

When you finish creating an invoice, you can new select how you want to send the invoice to your customer:

We’ll remember your choice on a per-contact basis, so you can mix-and-match if you want.

And for those who are picky about their invoice numbers, you can now manually assign a number to an invoice:

Relax, Xero & MinuteDock have GST Sorted

Those of you in New Zealand will no doubt notice a change this Friday morning - GST has risen from 12.5% to 15%.

Xero has the adjustment in the bag - and because we use Xero as our accounting engine, MinuteDock does too.

We need you to sync with Xero so we can read across the new rates.

We’ve also added a Tax Rate selector on the invoices screen - make sure you check the IRD’s advice, or chat to your accountant, and pick the right rate.

Ah, the beauty of cloud software!

Hey Dockers - hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

Jared has just finished up a couple of small changes

Per-User Rates: You can now set an hourly rate on a user, and group your invoice line items by who did the work (just choose Grouping: User on the edit invoice screen)
Finer-grained access control: You can now enable and disable the managing of Contacts, Tasks and Invoices, and whether your users can see other people’s time all independently!
Who can see who - You can now choose which contacts your users can log time against - choose them from the “Allowed Contacts” list.

You can get to the new shininess by clicking the “Manage” link next to a User inside the “Account” tab.

There’s a new tab in MinuteDock today - “Goals”. From now on, MinuteDock doesn’t just help you track your time - it also keeps you productive.

Here are two ways you can use goals - we’re sure you clever cookies will come up with a few more.

Track a fixed-quote project

Set up a goal with the total budget you’ve estimated for your project. As you log time, the progress bar will fill up and show you how much time you’ve used, and how much you’ve got left - get cracking!

Watch your daily hours

Set up a goal to track 8 hours every day, and as you log time it’ll fill up. Make sure you fill it every day, and check your history to see how well you’ve done in the past.

Xero tweaks

If you haven’t noticed, we’ve recently refreshed the way we sync across Contacts and Invoices from Xero.

We’ve added an icon which tells you which Contacts are from Xero. Click it to go to their to straight to their page in Xero.

We’ve also smartened up how we handle you merging Contacts in Xero - this complements the merging feature we added a couple of weeks back.

This week we’ve had the pleasure of Jared being back on deck after finishing with his uni exams… as you can tell by this picture:

In a short few days we’ve made the following improvements…

Re-Docking an entry from today now just continues the entry rather than duplicating it. You can read more about redocking here.
Deleting tasks and hiding non-Xero contacts now gives you the option of merging any entries with the contact or task (if there are any associated):
We’ve added two new boxes to the reports for admin users - billable and unbillable hours, so you can get a quick overview of how profitable your week was:
A new graph for admin users - rates breakdown! So you can see exactly what % of your time was spent on what rate:
We’ve added some new filtering options to the reports - show only unbillable entries or show only billable entries (or show all of course). Again this lets admin users tailor a report to their day-to-day analysis requirements.
We’ve started a massive overhaul of our help system - starting with some tweaks of the FAQ page - there’s now a list of questions at the top of the page letting you quickly find what you need (as our FAQ list grows and grows!) - watch this space as we make MinuteDock easier to use and understand!

Innovative Uses of MinuteDock

We got a great email today from an innovative MinuteDock user who has to travel to the offices of his clients on a day-to-day basis. He loves tracking his time spent on MinuteDock, but for travelling he charges by the kilometer rather than by the time spent.

He managed to come up with a great solution for overcoming this hurdle; he simply logs all kilometers travelled as hours, and uses a task #travel with an hourly rate set at his $/km rate. So when travelling 12km to his client he logs @client_name travelling #travel 12hrs, and the client gets an invoice with something like (15 Jun) travelling [12 units] [$x].

Pretty cool huh? We were impressed :-)

Redock!

You’ve been asking for it, we’ve been listening, and we’ve finally delivered. Redocking is here, and it’s awesome.

We thought long and hard about this one. We wanted to let you restart an existing entry, but still leave you with a good idea of how your day panned out - that includes the interruptions!

So instead of redock replacing an existing entry, it just creates a duplicate with a fresh timer.

We also beefed up the way invoices merge lines with similar descriptions so that having a bunch of entries isn’t troublesome come invoice time.

Google recently announced the Chrome Web Store, which sounds like it’s going be a kickass new way to deploy web apps.

So we thought we’d dip our toes in! If you happen to have an “App-Enabled” Chrome Version (instructions for Windows and for Mac) you can now add MinuteDock!
